One of the most prominent figures among the classical pragmatics was John Dewey (1859 to 1952). He is known for his broad-ranging contributions to various areas of philosophical inquiry, such as social theory, ethics, law, philosophy of education aesthetics, and the philosophy of religion. In the latter part of his life, he began to view pragmatism as the philosophy of democracy.
